MARAWI CITY, May 24–As part of the solid waste management project of the government in this city, Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) opened the central material recovery facility.
Constructed within 2.2 hectares and located in Brgy. Malimono (Dulay), the facility is designed to receive, sort, process and store recyclable or compostable materials. This will cater loads of recyclable wastes from all barangays in the City.
DENR Environmental Management Bureau Region 10 focal person Abbas Lao said that the primary purpose of the facility is to “enhance and maximize waste diversion from final disposal facility to available market for recycling material for reprocessing as mandated under RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.”
The CMRF facility has four components which include sorting, processing, storage and load-out. It houses unloading and receiving stations, processing area, storage area, supply room, with its machineries such as plastic waste densifier, glass pulverizer, plastic shredder, and composter.
Mayor Majul Gandamra said that the inauguration of the facility shows the commitment of the government to minimize wastes in the city.
“This facility is a manifestation of intensified efforts of the government in order to minimize the wastes collected in the City,” he said.
Meanwhile, TFBM Chairperson Sec. Eduardo del Rosario called on the unity of the community in protecting the environment.
“We really have to protect the environment. Kung hindi natin pagtutulungan na bigyan ng atensyon at tamang management ang environment, at the end of the day tayo rin ang magsusuffer. [If we do not work together to give attention and proper management to the environment, at the end of the day we will also suffer. What we are doing is not really for us but for future generations,” he said.
There are basically four components of a CMRF facility, that is, sorting, processing, storage and load out. It houses unloading and receiving stations, processing area, storage area, supply room, with its machineries such as plastic waste densifier, glass pulverizer, plastic shredder and composter. The main function of CMRF is to maximize the quantity of recyclables processed while producing materials that will generate the highest possible revenues in the market. Its objective is to produce clean and recyclable materials that will minimize the disposal of wastes in Marawi City.
The facility can cater to 15 to 20 tons of wastes per day. However, DENR – Finance, Information Systems and Mining Concerns Asec. Nonita Caguioa stressed that waste management should start in households.
“It is not only the government who will be doing to minimize all these garbage. Ang pinakaimportate ay ang [What is importante is the] participation from households,” she said.
With funds from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management – Marawi Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Program, the facility is just one of the infrastructures constructed for the TFBM Solid Waste Management Project. Completed infrastructures include an administration building, overhauling area, warehouse and storage, and powerhouse with supply, delivery, and installation of 100-KVA standby power/generator set.
