7 crew of ill-fated sea vessel rescued in Surigao Norte

BUTUAN CITY: Seven crewmembers of the ill-fated LCT Cebu Great Ocean were rescued by local officials and residents in the towns of Malimono and San Francisco in Surigao del Norte early morning on Wednesday (April 21).

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), in a report on Wednesday, said the rescue of the crewmembers was made possible with the support of the local government units (LGUs) in the area, residents, and the members of the Philippine National Police–Maritime Group (PNP–MARIG).

The seven rescued crewmembers were identified as Jun Mar Galeos, John Renzon Guanzon, Noli Labucay, Roger Polo, Arjie Bacarra, Joji Villanueva and Felipe Quebuen Jr.

The retrieved dead bodies of the three crew members were also identified as Engr. Marvin Lusica, Norman Galon and Lemuel Dadivas.

“As of 01:00 p.m. (Wednesday), the PCG and PNP–MARIG continue their search and rescue (SAR) operations to look for other missing crewmembers.

The PCG also deployed a land mobility vehicle that conducts patrol operations along the shorelines of Malimono and San Francisco,” the PCG report said.

 It added that PCG personnel continue to assist the survivors at the Malimono Regional Health Unit and the Caraga Regional for their speedy recovery.

Still missing as of this posting are 10 more crewmembers of LCT Cebu Great Ocean, including the skipper identified as Mario Palacio.

The sea vessel ran aground in the shoreline of Barangay Cantapoy in Malimono on Monday afternoon  due to strong winds and huge waves caused by Typhoon Bising.
