MARANAO leaders such as traditional, lawyers, professionals, women, youth and other sectors of the Bangsa Meranao (Maranao Nation) who are mostly non-government and independent, will hold a one-day congress on September 30, 2017, in Iligan City.
Lawyer Nasrollah B. Conding, chair of the Congress’ Coordinating Committee, said the forthcoming congress is aimed, among others, to look into the almost four-month Marawi Siege, help assess the actual damage of the siege and the financial condition of the Maranaos, as well as the preservation of the Maranao culture and heritage.
Conding, also a traditional leader himself being the Sultan of Bacolod in Marawi, said the Congress is expected to gather about 500 participants representing different sectors of the Maranao society.
He said renowned Muslim leader Sultan sa Ranao (Sultan of Lanao) Dr. Firdausi Abbas will lead prominent personalities who will grace the occasion.
Sultan Abbas, a famous international lawyer is a commissioner of the expanded Bangsamoro Transition Committee (BTC). He heads the Muslim Lawyers Asociation of the Philippines and the Bangsamoro Islamic Party.
It was learned that the proposed Congress is supported by the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
MNLF first vice chair Datu Duma Sani, a member of the Top 90, is leading the organizing group of the proposed Congress. He is Sultan of Guimba of Marawi.
